Agriculture

Figs Dried figs Goat's Cheese

Most of the agriculture initially started on the island was for personal use, designed for self sustenance, thus, even today you will see vineyards, olive groves and fig trees spread throughout the island. Visiting this island you will feel as you have gone back in time, donkeys are still on the roads carrying the harvest to the oil refineries or wine presses, villagers carrying wood and heavier items. Once in a while you might come across a heard of sheep, but mostly goats are used still today for fresh goat milk and making goat cheese.

The main agriculture on the island is olive oil and wine production. Products such as dried figs and olives, quality honey and various types of jams and marmalades.

The communal garden boasts many varieties of vegetables that can be cultivated and picked during your stay. Each family has a cottage or main house accommodations and can cook their own meals or use the outdoor cooking area with barbeque and communal table.

Olive Harvest

Olive oil makingParticipating in olive harvest, preparing the olives for oil production, or packaging for immediate use. Traditionally, once the olive is picked, there are several ways of treating it before it goes to cold press, some people will soak it in sea water, some in regular water, some not in anything but will bring it to press.

The locals use different methods, depending on their traditions, but the end result is a virgin olive oil that cannot be compared to any other in this region. Come and join our olive oil production tours, where you can experience firsthand traditional ways of harvest and production, the locals say that 1 teaspoon of olive oil keeps the doctor away, medical research backs up that claim, and I guess our ancestors were much smarter than we thought.
